9:00 – 10:00 KEYNOTE: “Internet Topology Measurement: Past, Present, Future” by Yuval Shavitt (Tel Aviv University)

Abstract: Many fields in networking used the old ARPAnet topology for testing new algorithmic ideas through simulations until the turn of the century. However, there was a growing realization that the old ARPAnet topology does not reflect the true Internet structure. The work of the Faloutsos brothers in SIGCOMM 1999 used analysis of BGP feeds to show that the basic structure of the Internet topology at the AS level is significantly different than what was believed. These results come in perfect synch with results on other world networks to open the gates to the field of network science. Over a decade since this initial study, network topology measurement has increased our understanding of the Internet structure, and supplied us with ever more detailed maps. I will detailed the current situation and discuss new directions and challenges of topology measurements.
